Transportation of pets

Dogs, cats, ornamental birds, poultry or young ornamental animals may be transported on the train in accordance with the procedure established by the laws and regulations governing animal protection. A passenger transporting an animal is responsible for ensuring that the animal does not disturb other passengers.
No more than 10 (ten) dogs may be transported in one train carriage, and no more than 2 (two) dogs accompanied by one owner may be present in one seating compartment.
A dog must be transported on the train wearing a muzzle and held on a short leash, or without a muzzle, placed in a bag, container or cage suitable for transporting animals. Other animals must be placed in suitable bags, containers or cages. It is prohibited to transport a dog or other animal on a seat.
A fee for transporting one animal or several animals (if they are in the same cage, container or bag) is charged as for one piece of baggage.
A passenger who is entitled to fare concessions in the territory of Latvia shall pay for transporting an animal or several animals according to the tariffs approved by the carrier.
A guide dog or assistance dog providing companion or assistance services is transported free of charge, provided that the requirements established for such dogs in the laws and regulations on animal protection are met:

- guide dogs and assistance dogs performing their duties – accompanying their owner – do not have to wear a muzzle, as this may interfere with performing their duties (for example, picking up objects that have fallen on the ground);

- so that other passengers can easily recognise that the dog is a service animal, it must be visibly marked with special identification signs or accessories – a collar, leash, harness or cape with a reflective element and the inscription: “guide dog” or “assistance dog”.

- a dog may be used as a guide dog or assistance dog only if it has been specially trained and a certificate confirming the dog's suitability for the work to be performed has been issued.
