Vivi carried 16 million passengers on its trains over nine months; 98.5% of trips completed on time in September

08.10.2026

In the first nine months of this year, Vivi transported 16 million train passengers. This is 0.8% or 135,000 fewer than in the corresponding period of 2025, but 1.5 million more than in 2024. In the first nine months, the largest decline in passenger numbers compared to 2025 was on the Tukums line, where 508,500 fewer passengers were transported due to repair work by VAS “Latvijas dzelzceļš”.

Train punctuality – an indicator that reflects the on-time completion of trips according to the timetable – stood at 98.5% in September. We were able to achieve strong results during this period despite the repair work on the electrified railway infrastructure along the Jelgava line being carried out by VAS “Latvijas dzelzceļš”. In situations where track availability is limited on certain sections, any disruption to a single train’s movement or infrastructure operation often has a domino effect on several subsequent trips.

In the first nine months of this year, passenger numbers increased on three electrified railway lines – Jelgava, Aizkraukle and Skulte. The sharpest increase in passenger numbers, compared to the same period in 2025, was on the route to Jelgava, where it rose by 7%, or 172,000 passengers. On the Aizkraukle line, passenger numbers increased by 4%, or almost 148,000. On the Skulte line, passenger numbers increased by 2%, or 49,000. The Tukums route continues to carry the most passengers, with 5.4 million people transported over the nine-month period.

The number of passengers on diesel train services between Riga and Daugavpils has increased over the past nine months, with 9,000 more passengers carried than during the same period last year. Meanwhile, passenger numbers on the Lugaži–Valga route have increased by 15%, reflecting continued high demand for convenient and affordable international rail service in the Baltic States.

Last year, extensive modernisation of the railway infrastructure started – VAS “Latvijas dzelzceļš” is rebuilding passenger platforms, providing more convenient and safer access to trains, as well as upgrading the electrified train network on several lines. Vivi encourages passengers to keep an eye on the timetable changes due to various maintenance works.
