In the first eight months of this year, Vivi transported 14 million train passengers. That is 0.7% – or 99,000 – fewer than in the corresponding period of 2025. In the first eight months, the largest decline in passenger numbers compared to 2025 was on the Tukums line, where 451,800 fewer passengers were transported due to repair work by VAS “Latvijas dzelzceļš”.
Train punctuality – an indicator that reflects the on-time completion of trips according to the timetable – stood at 97.2% over the eight-month period. We were able to achieve strong results during this period despite the extensive infrastructure damage caused by the August storm, as well as repair work on the electrified railway infrastructure along the Jelgava line being carried out by VAS “Latvijas dzelzceļš”. In situations where track availability is limited on certain sections, any disruption to a single train’s movement or infrastructure operation often has a domino effect on several subsequent trips.
In the first eight months of this year, passenger numbers increased on three electrified railway lines – Jelgava, Aizkraukle and Skulte. The sharpest increase in passenger numbers, compared to the same period in 2025, was on the route to Jelgava, where it rose by 7%, or 155,000 passengers. On the Aizkraukle line, passenger numbers increased by 4%, or almost 140,000. On the Skulte line, passenger numbers increased by 3%, or 57,000. The Tukums route continues to carry the most passengers, with 4.7 million people transported over the eight-month period.
The number of passengers on diesel train services between Riga and Daugavpils has increased over the past eight months, with 6,000 more passengers carried than during the same period last year. Meanwhile, passenger numbers on the Lugaži–Valga route have increased by 16%, reflecting continued high demand for convenient and affordable international rail service in the Baltic States.
Last year, extensive modernisation of the railway infrastructure started – VAS “Latvijas dzelzceļš” is rebuilding passenger platforms, providing more convenient and safer access to trains, as well as upgrading the electrified train network on several lines. Vivi encourages passengers to keep an eye on the timetable changes due to various maintenance works.
