In the first four months of this year, Vivi carried 6.3 million train passengers. This is 2.5% or 158,000 fewer than in 2025, but 13% more than in 2024. The largest decline in passenger numbers compared to 2025 is on the Tukums line. The number of passengers on that line has fallen by 13.6%, or more than 305,000, because VAS “Latvijas dzelzceļš” reduced the number of trips on the Tukums line due to repair work.
In April, train punctuality – an indicator that reflects the on-time completion of trips according to the timetable – reached 98.5% for the second consecutive month. This was achieved despite extensive repair work on the electrified railway infrastructure on the Tukums and Jelgava lines and at Zemitāni Station, carried out by VAS “Latvijas dzelzceļš”. Track access is limited on these sections, and consequently, any disruption to a single train’s movement or infrastructure operation often has a domino effect on several subsequent trips.
In the first four months of this year, passenger numbers increased on three electrified railway lines – Jelgava, Aizkraukle and Skulte. The sharpest increase in passenger numbers, compared to the same period in 2025, was on the route to Jelgava, where it rose by 6.9%, or 74,900 passengers. On the Aizkraukle line, passenger numbers increased by 4%, or 69,400. The Tukums route continues to carry the most passengers, with more than 1.9 million people transported over the past four months.
At the same time, passenger numbers on the Lugaži–Valga route have increased by 33.6%, reflecting continued high demand for convenient and affordable international rail service in the Baltic States.
In the first four months, 12,800 Riga Single Tickets were sold, including 3,100 in April. It allows you to save one euro per journey when using both the services of the passenger train operator Vivi in Zone A and the transport of “Rīgas satiksme”. In April, the majority of these tickets – namely, 41% – were purchased for the Riga–Tukums route. The Riga–Jelgava route accounted for 22%, Riga–Skulte for 21%, and Riga–Aizkraukle for 15% of all tickets sold.
Last year, extensive modernisation of the railway infrastructure started – VAS “Latvijas dzelzceļš” is rebuilding passenger platforms, providing more convenient and safer access to trains, as well as upgrading the electrified train network on several lines. Vivi encourages passengers to keep an eye on the timetable changes due to various maintenance works.
