Vivi trains carried 1.4 million passengers in February; 96.3% of trips completed on time

10.03.2026

In February of this year, 1.4 million passengers used the services of the passenger train operator Vivi. This is 3% or 50,000 fewer than in 2025, but 11% more than in 2024. Electrified lines had the greatest impact on changes in passenger numbers. Passenger numbers on the Jelgava and Aizkraukle lines continued to rise, but on the Tukums and Skulte lines – where the number of trips was reduced due to repair work by VAS “Latvijas dzelzceļš” – passenger traffic fell by 62,000 and 4,500, respectively.

In February, train punctuality – an indicator that reflects the on-time completion of trips according to the timetable – reached 96.3%. On electrified lines where new trains operate, this indicator was slightly higher – 96.6% – while diesel train punctuality stood at 95.1%. This was achieved despite cold weather conditions and extensive repair work on the electrified railway infrastructure on the Tukums line and at Zemitāni Station, carried out by VAS “Latvijas dzelzceļš”. Track access is limited on these sections, and consequently, any disruption to a single train’s movement or infrastructure operation often has a domino effect on several subsequent trips.

In February, passenger numbers continued to increase on the electrified Jelgava and Aizkraukle railway lines where the new Vivi electric trains operate. The sharpest increase in passenger numbers compared to February 2025 was on the route to Jelgava, where it rose by 4% – or 12,000 passengers – and on the Aizkraukle line, where passenger numbers were up by 2% – or 8,000 passengers. The highest number of passengers remained on the Tukums line, where it exceeded 443,000.

At the same time, passenger numbers on the Lugaži–Valga route increased by 62%, indicating high demand for convenient and affordable international train service in the Baltic States.

More than 3,000 Riga Single Tickets were sold in February. It allows you to save one euro per journey when using both the services of the passenger train operator Vivi within Zone A and the transport of “Rīgas satiksme”. Nearly half, or 49%, of these tickets were purchased by passengers on the Riga–Tukums route; 18% were sold on the Riga–Jelgava route; 17% on the Riga–Skulte route; and 15% on the Riga–Aizkraukle route.

Last year, extensive modernisation of the passenger transport infrastructure started – VAS “Latvijas dzelzceļš” is rebuilding passenger platforms, providing more convenient and safer access to trains, as well as upgrading the electrified train network on several lines. Vivi encourages passengers to keep an eye on the timetable changes due to various maintenance works.
